- Fill out a change of address form from your local post office.
- Send change of address notices to friends, family, and important places like the IRS, Debtors, and magazine subscriptions.
- Reserve your rental truck and/or contact moving company.
- Make travel arrangements (airlines, car rental, hotel/corporate housing) if you are moving out of town.
- Obtain your medical and dental records, x-rays and prescription histories.
- Record the serial numbers of electronic equipment and take inventory of important items that may be lost, broken or stolen during your move.
- Start using up perishable food items so there is less to pack.
- Begin packing items like trinkets, clothes that are out of season, books, etc.

One or Two weeks before you move: |
- Switch your utility services to your new address. Inform electronic, trash, water, newspaper, telephone and cable companies that you are moving.
- Find friends or movers to help you on the big day. Confirm with them with enough advanced notice that you can find someone else to help.
- Clean your rugs and clothing and have them wrapped for moving.
- Close bank accounts and have your funds put into your new bank account.
- Collect valuables from your safe-deposit box. Make copies of important documents before you mail or take them to your new place.
- Defrost refrigerator and freezer.
- Start packing items that you will not need on a daily basis.
- Figure out your travel route and schedule and send it to your family or a close friend.

- Check to make sure that all of the drawers, closets, storage areas, shelves, etc are empty.
- Put all important documents, money and jewelry in a safe place, or use registered mail.
- Carry credit cards and traveler’s checks for quick access to available funds.
- When you arrive at your new home:
Change the address on your driver’s license.
- Get new policies for insurance (auto, renter’s insurance, etc.)
